Once you have the basics of the bum-diddy, the next step is to build repertoire in different keys. This class moves at a slow pace while covering drills and a new tune each class. Emphasis on developing your ear and playing in rhythm.

*Deering Good Tyme Banjos are available for rent for the session, or sale at a discounted price. Contact if you are interested in renting or purchasing a banjo.

Evie Ladin is a banjo player, step-dancer, singer, and songwriter with a lifetime of experience in traditional American cultural arts. She grew up in a trad folk scene up and down the Eastern Seaboard of the US, travels the world, and calls the rich arts scene in Oakland, California home. With The Stairwell Sisters, all-gal old-time teardown, Evie performs traditional and original material on clawhammer banjo, vocals, clogging and hambone. With Keith Terry & Crosspulse, she performs rhythm-based multi-cultural music & dance works, bringing her Appalachian skills to collaborations with a variety of other cultural arts, including other styles with roots in the African Diaspora. Evie calls rowdy community square dances, performs for extremely diverse populations of school-kids, and tears it up at clubs and festivals.

Erik Pearson has a degree in Music Composition from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and has played and recorded in many bands, written chamber music for Bay Area choreographers, and provided a live soundtrack for internationally known storyteller Diane Ferlatte on banjo and guitar. His love of old time music and the clawhammer banjo comes from a moment at Oberlin when he heard three friends playing fiddle tunes in the stairwell and one of them said, “"Go git your guitar, buddy!"” Things were never quite the same after that.

Erik can often be seen performing with Diane Ferlatte, Evie Ladin and Keith Terry in Evil Diane/the Evie Ladin Band, The Crooked Jades, Matt Lax and Nearly Beloved, Sonya Hunter, Mushroom, Billy Talbot, and others. He is a member of the faculty at the Community Music Center in San Francisco.
