The Country-Jazz Connection: A Guitar Workshop w/ Dan Bankhurst & Jim Nichols
Saturday, May 13, 1:00 - 3:30 pm
$40.00 advance or drop-in
Country and Jazz are two styles that intertwine often. Many people don't know that you can indeed use jazz in country, and vise versa. Jim Nichols and Dan Bankhurst will be discussing how these two styles merge. They'll be diving deeper into each style individually as well. Being primarily fingerstyle guitarists, Jim and Dan will analyze and discuss many of the fingerstyle greats such as, Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Lenny Breau, Jerry Reed, and Tommy Emmanuel. They will discuss how these country fingerstyle guitarists often used jazz in their vocabulary. A couple popular country/jazz fingerstyle songs will be dissected, discussed, and learned, to reveal the similarities between country and jazz.
Nashville-based guitarist Dan Bankhurst has shared the stage with many of the best fingerstyle players on the planet including Phil Keaggy, Muriel Anderson, Jim Nichols, Thom Bresh, John Knowles, Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland, and the late Pete Huttlinger (who produced Dan’s critically-acclaimed first CD, “At First Sight” in 2013). Dan’s second acclaimed solo CD, “Tradition Pickin,’” was released in 2015 and paid tribute to the Mount Rushmore of Fingerpicking Masters: Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, and Jerry Reed. Dan has performed repeatedly at the annual Chet Atkins Appreciation Society Convention, appeared at the Chet Atkins Tribute Show in Nashville in 2014, and was recently invited to showcase his fingerpicking talents on Steve Krenz’s Gibson’s Learn & Master Guitar Series, and gave a special fingerstyle guitar demonstration at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
Jazz/Fingerstyle guitarist Jim Nichols’ credentials include appearances on television, radio, concert halls, and clubs including Carnegie Hall and the Tonight Show. He has played and/or recorded with Kenny Rankin, Chet Atkins, Hubert Laws, Eddie Harris, Buddy Montgomery, Van Morrison, Toots Thielemans, Tom Waits, Tommy Emmanuel and many others. Jim has taught clinics in the U.S. and in Europe including Stanford and Jamie Aebersold’s Jazz Workshops. He was featured at the ’97 Django Reinhardt Festival in France with the great European guitarists, Romane and MartinTaylor. Jim is featured on “World of Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar” for Stefan Grossman’s Guitar Workshop and has a Jazz Guitar instruction video “Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar” for Mel Bay Music.
