The name filled a spur-of-the-moment need and provided a wry comment on the dominant bluegrass culture of the era. Jazz Search West is the Bay Area’s Annual Jazz Talent Search for instrumentalists and vocalists (15 and up). Margaret BeltonMargaret Belton and a band of outstanding Bay Area musicians pay tribute to the incomparable Patsy Cline, who immortalized songs like “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “She’s Got You,” Sweet Dreams,” and “Walkin’ After Midnight.” Margaret recently won the Theatre Bay Area Award for Best Principal Female Actor in a Musical for her portrayal of Patsy in the Altarena Playhouse production of Always…Patsy Cline.

Mokoomba was born in 2001, at the border of Zimbabwe and the Zambia, where the Zambesi River meets the legendary Victoria Falls. Based in the Tonga culture, and guided by vocalist and percussionist Mathias Muzaza, Mokoomba has been called “quite simply the most impressive band Zimbabwe has produced in recent memory” by Afropop Worldwide’s Banning Eyre. Mokoomba exploded onto the world stage with exceptional energy on the 2012 international debut Rising Tide.

When Maria Quiles (vocals and guitar) and Rory Cloud (vocals and guitar) met in 2011, both were adrift. Maria had quit her job, given up her San Francisco apartment, and moved in with her uncle in order to pursue music full-time. Rory had left behind a stable schedule of gigs and music lessons in Southern California to seek a new music community elsewhere. He eventually wound up living out of his Toyota Corolla in San Francisco, where he first heard Maria at an open mic.

For 30 years, the Makaha Sons have committed themselves to perpetuating traditional Hawaiian music throughout Hawai‘i and the World. In 1976 the Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau began its professional career with five members as an opening act in a small nightclub known as “Uptown Yokos.” Throughout the years the group has reorganized several times; from members seeking other professional careers, to the untimely passing of two key members of the original group.

The Stray Birds are a folk-roots trio from Pennsylvania farm country who play as if they’ve been making music together forever. Their harmonies are gorgeous and gritty, and their deft instrumentals always serve the song. “Clearly these are players with chops, songwriters with a fierce command of their craft. But they also seem to have a grip on when to lend a hand, and when to let the songs fly on their own.
