Fiddle: Combine Artistry and Skills w/ Scots Tunes w/ Deby Benton Grosjean
Saturday, April 28, 1:00-2:30 pm Deby is a resplendent fiddler, melding the virtuosity of classical technique with the spontaneity of Celtic folk. She is a multifaceted musician expanding the dimensions as a workshop clinician, conductor, orchestrator and enjoys playing for dancers. Besides her well-received, solo CD productions Healing Well, O’er the Moor Among the Heather and Beyond the Shore, she’s appeared on over 40 recordings including the famous rock band Journey’s No Nation Illumine and VTR Cinema, Mary McLaughlin’s Celtic Requiem (Windham Hill) and many Gourd Music titles including a collaboration with guitarist William Coulter on Jefferson’s Fiddle. Driftwood Magazine review states that the CD is a “fascinating project...The resulting music is a rich mélange of varied instrumental voices, tempos, and styles in delightful arrangements that never bog down.” Deby’s fiddling is on the soundtrack of Ken Burns’ film Not for Ourselves Alone, viewed on PBS. You’ll find her published in Mel Bay’s Fiddle Anthology along with 40 other top fiddlers including Martin Hayes and Kevin Burke. A teacher of distinction, Deby’s on faculty at several music camps including Alasdair Fraser’s Scottish Fiddling School and Sierra Fiddle Camp for many years. She performs abroad spanning Taiwan, Canada, and throughout the USA including her hometown of Santa Cruz, California. She’s opened for Scotland’s singer Jim Malcom, England’s Maddy Prior, Ireland’s author Frank McCourt. Since starting her formal classical training at age eight, Deby has received awards in national and regional fiddle championships and honors in college for music major. Connection Magazine notes, “Her recordings will capture your heart and dance your feet.” To contact: Deby.fiddler@gmail.com • log on to www.debybentongrosjean.com For the workshop Deby will teach a couple of fiddle tunes and the group will explore bow techniques to take a melody to the next level of expression. Near the end of the workshop, we’ll combine with the cello class to develop skills to make great music together.
