Chirps says: I will be teaching Midwestern fiddle tunes by ear. I teach them in a holistic style- I play the first part of the tune slowly, over & over, and people figure out the tune. Once it seems that most are getting it, I work on any problematic bits. I also talk about where I learned the tune and perhaps variations and ornamentation.
Persons attending the workshop should be able to play some and learn by ear. I encourage use of recording devices, audio and/or video.
Art, who authored numerous books, recordings, and videos on traditional 5-string banjo picking styles and tunings beginning with "Old-Time Mountain Banjo" in 1968, will present a range of these styles and tunings, mostly learned first-hand from players like Pete Steele, Mabel Cawthorn, Buell Kazee, Ed Teague.
This will be a hands-on workshop--bring your banjo!-- but rather than concentrate on one or two tunes and tunings, Art
